Simply Striped Crochet Pet Placemat

Simply Striped Pet Placemat

Our dog, Tinkerbell, is a very active eater. She has been ever since she was a puppy. She will slide her bowl all over the kitchen floor trying to get the last little bit of kibble left. As funny as it is to watch her, what isn’t funny is tripping over her bowl after she’s finished. Thus, I created the Simply Striped Crochet Pet Placemat.

I bought some Bernat Maker Home Dec yarn a few months ago and have been dying to try it out. The texture of this yarn is soft, but sturdy. It is a cotton and nylon blend, which means it is absorbent and heavy enough to not slide around under her bowls and keep her bowls in place while she eats. The colors are vibrant, too, which I love. This just seems like the perfect yarn for this project.

This pattern is a super simple one and especially great for the beginner crocheter! It is a series of single crochet stitches (SC) with easy color changes to create the stripes.

Now, onto the pattern!

When you finish Row 53, you’ll be ready to start the border.

Note: You can stop here and weave in your ends from the color changes and then work your border OR you can crochet the border over the ends (like I did).

Border: In the MC (Clay), Ch 1, turn, and sc back across. In the last stitch, sc 3 in the same stitch. Turn your work so that you are working down the other side of your work. Sc across making sure to sc 3 in each corner stitch. Continue this way until you reach the 1st stitch. Slip stitch into the 1st stitch and fasten off. Tie off and weave in your end.

I love how this pet placemat turned out. Tink loves it, too! Her bowls stay in place so she can eat without having to chase her food all over the kitchen and I’m not in danger of tripping over her bowls after she’s finished! It’s a win-win for everyone. The mat also adds an element of elegance in our kitchen and keeps her dish area looking neat and put together so it isn’t an eyesore.

    1. Yes! It will make his little food area look so much better. Send me a picture when you do. I’d love to see how it turns out!

    1. It will definitely help with that! And it’s washable, too, so you don’t have to worry about messes or stains.
