My very first crochet project ever was my eldest son’s baby blanket. It was tedious because it was all in single crochet, my stitches were TIGHT, and there were no color changes. I was SO proud of that baby blanket, though. To this day, I still make baby blankets for friends and family who are expecting. This baby blanket, however, is extra special.
My dear friend is pregnant with a Rainbow Baby. If you’ve never heard of a Rainbow Baby, it is a baby born after the loss of another baby. The “rainbow” symbolizes the beautiful rainbow that comes after a storm. I designed this blanket with rainbow colors for the special rainbow baby.
This blanket uses the C2C stitch for the body and the Moss stitch for the border. I am a huge fan of the C2C stitch because of how elegant it looks and how quickly it works up. I decided on the Moss stitch for the border because it creates beautiful corners while still keeping the focus on the body of the blanket. I used Caron Simply Soft yarn, which is a #4 worsted weight yarn, in 6 different rainbow colors, but you can use any worsted weight yarn and colors you would like. This baby blanket measures 31″ x 31.5″.
After the Storm Baby Blanket
Materials:
- Caron Simply Soft in Watermelon, Sunshine, Soft Green, Blue Mint, Orchid and White. You will need 2 skeins of White.
- H Hook
- Scissors
- Needle
I’ve included this printable C2C graph for an easy reference for the body of the blanket.
The Body
Start by chaining 6. DC in the 4th chain from the hook and in the next 2 chains. Turn your work. Chain 6. DC in the 4th chain from the hook and in the next 2 stitches. Slip Stitch into the chain 3 space from the previous block and ch 3 then 3 DC in the same space. Continue this way through the increase rounds.
Increase Rows:
Rows 1-5 in Orchid
Rows 6-8 in White
Rows 9-13 in Blue Mint
Rows 14-16 in White
Rows 17-21 in Soft Green
Rows 22-24 in White
Rows 25-29 in Sunshine
Rows 30-32 in White
Rows 33-37 in Watermelon
Row 38 in White
When you’re ready to decrease, crochet your blocks all the way to the end of the row. Instead of turning and chaining 6 like you would when you’re increasing, you will turn, chain 1 and slip stitch in the 3 DC chains across the top and then slip stitch into the chain 3 space from that same block. Then you will chain 3 and crochet 3 DC in the same space. Continue this way until the end.
Decrease Rows:
Rows 39-40 in White
Rows 41-45 in Sunshine
Rows 46-48 in White
Rows 49-53 in Soft Green
Rows 54-56 in White
Rows 57-61 in Blue Mint
Rows 62-64 in White
Rows 65-69 in Orchid
Rows 70-72 in White
Rows 73-76 in Blue Mint
Finish off and weave in all ends.
